the making of a hand painted chandelier by Jenny FloravitaMy hand painted glass chandeliers are made by hand, by me. You would never know this if I didn’t point it out.

The glass bowls that I use to create my special reverse painted glass chandeliers are special for many reasons. First they must be of extremely high quality. Any fixture that you see in the big box home stores that are bowl shapes are not the correct kind of glass. They are all paper-thin bowls that won’t show the painting well. In fact, the bowls that you see on the big production fixtures are made cheaply in China. There are many reasons why I cannot use these glass bowls and their quality pales in comparison. In fact the comparison is often apples and oranges. The art collecting public would never know this if I didn’t point it out.

My hand painted chandeliers require a very special glass bowl and I make these in my studio. They begin with a piece of flat glass that is of the highest clarity. I must hand cut the shape of the bowl which is something that requires a very strong glass cutting technique. A break in the glass can happen at any point and in fact does happen to me and  is a very expensive mistake. I tend to make my glass art bowls in batches. The above piece of glass is one of a dozen glass bowls that I created in December, most of which I am still cold working and finishing.

A lot of work goes into the creation of my hand painted glass chandeliers.
