GDPR
To address GDPR and be very transparent in plain English (from what I understand), I first want to say that I do not target European markets simply because my work is so expensive to ship internationally. My prints/gifts are all purchased and sold internationally through a large third party business that is in fact the largest fine art publishing business in the world…and they should be GDPR compliant. They ship the art gifts from countries all over the word and shipping costs are normal and reasonable.
However, if you are in Europe and you like viewing my work here on my website, the cookie data that my site collects is normal and is to make the user experience good. For example, my site might remember if you’ve looked at a painting in my shop and might continue to show you that painting while you are in session using my site.
Email lists: Clients are never signed up for my email list without written consent in an email coming directly from you—I ask you. And unsubscribing from my email list is as easy as hitting the unsubscribe button. Done. The email provider that I use, Mailchimp, is GDPR compliant. I also only ask for a first name and email for non-to-the-trade lists. You can edit or unsubscribe anytime. AND on top of that, when people unsubscribe I hard delete them out of my system to keep my lists extremely clean. I receive notices of who subscribes and who unsubscribes and these days, I contact all new subscribers to ask how I can help them and what interests them (and likewise, with unsubscribes I simply go into my account and hard delete all data out manually to make sure that it’s not stored anywhere).
Google: might remember that you’ve visited my site (like they do with ALL websites) but I’ve asked analytics to only hold the data for the minimum that they’d allow me to select which was 14 months. And in essence, in the rare times that I look at that data, I simply use it to see what pages are popular how people are moving from one page to another and for how long. It never tells me exactly who is looking, no names involved.
Facebook: will know if you’ve visited my site if you do so while logged into Facebook—that’s what a cookie does. In their algorithms, they might show my work to you and you can decide if you want to view it or not. Cookies in reality aren’t all that bad. If you regularly erase them then they are gone…but know that they help your experience online. People shop online. Retail stores are going the way of the dinosaur and people now prefer to purchase and browse for lifestyle products online. When you erase cookies then the big guys like Google and Facebook might start showing you things that aren’t visually interesting to you until they re-figure out what you like. Eliminating cookies doesn’t mean that you won’t se suggested ads—it just resets the ads to be guesses. I do not target European viewers in Facebook intentionally.
Purchasing from SHOP: After your purchase, I print out the order and retain that info for my tax records for 7 years. Addresses that I ship to need to be retained so that I can prove that those were either out-of-state sales (not requiring California state tax) or that they were specific California sales that had specific state tax rates assigned, which I pay. This is normal. For payments, I use either Paypal, which has GDPR info on it’s site or Square, which also should be GDPR compliant.
To European Clients: All of this said, if you do want to talk to me, look at my website, purchase art, I am by no means anti-Europe…it’s just that this new law has made all businesses address the concerns and I’m trying to do so within my capacity. IF you have any questions, feel free to email me…and as a security measure afterwords, if you request, I will hard delete the email address from my system (but my guess is that this will never be a request). If any of you do all of a sudden take notice of my original oil and watercolor paintings or my chandeliers, I’m happy to quote shipping and will keep it as low as possible.
I will revise this info and continue to stay up to date with privacy and technology to the best of my ability. And if you have any questions, feel free to call my studio at 925-625-7969 or email me at: jenny@floravita.com
I just want you to ALL know that I respect your privacy!!! All of my viewers and collectors alike.
