Today, I’m painting something a little different. It’s going to be a quiet, moody grey seascape.

This was painted at Navarro Beach, on the road to Mendocino, more than four hours from where I live. When we first arrived, the sun was out, and I took time to scout a location. But when we returned the next day, the weather had shifted. It was grey, cold, and windy. If you paint plein air, you learn quickly that conditions are rarely perfect. There will be days when the weather challenges you. In those moments, you have a choice: pack up and do something else, or set up and paint anyway.

On this day, I chose to paint.

Experience has taught me the importance of preparation. I brought a blanket, hoping to make myself as comfortable as possible for a one-hour painting session. I unpacked my travel watercolor sketchbook, laid out my brushes, and settled in.

This video shows the story of what unfolded during this session. I did like the final painting at the end!
