I spent a lot of time on my newest light infused Kauai plumeria watercolor painting, titled Summertime Kauai Island Plumerias, which is a watercolor on heavy 300lb Arches paper. The size of this stunning original painting is 28×22 inches. The edges of this piece are beautiful so if matting paintings is not your preferred look, then this painting can be floated in the frame without a mat. Framing options are endless and larger frames can really add size and polish to watercolors.

A short video shows the size of the painting in context with me:

Large realistic watercolors take a lot more time than oils with my technique of layering colors. This beautiful summery Kauai plumeria watercolor painting is even prettier in person. Colors and shadowing need to built up carefully in watercolor because if you lose the natural white areas that are most important in the paper, then they are usually not recoverable to the original crispness. The thicker or heavier weight paper, the more the paint is absorbed making it challenging to build up the vibrancy if that is your goal.

I love the soft light infused look of modern realistic watercolors. At this point in my career as a painter, when I paint in watercolor, I try to bring out the beautify of watercolor instead of trying to make them look just like oils and they do take a lot longer to create but are well worth the effort. I no longer feel the need to compare the two art forms—watercolor to oil painting—as modern realistic watercolor has earned it’s place with all of the other well selling and established art forms. There have been lots of wonderful painters who have championed this beautiful art form in the past 30 years. Watercolors can be very contemporary.

The image below shows how this painting could look, framed and to size, as either a print or an original in a simple contemporary frame…though if you went wider, you have a grander look:

Summertime Kauai Island Plumeria watercolor painting is 22×29 inches on 300lb Arches watercolor paper, by artist Jenny Floravita as seen on a wall as a framed example—and this can be ordered as a framed print just like this through my print shop

And if you prefer to hang a piece like this as a canvas print, that is also possible as I can offer my watercolors on paper, canvas, metal and wood, to just name a few modern surfaces, and you can see print options here.

This gorgeous Kauai plumeria watercolor painting can be printed as large as 60×44.5 inches. And to be very transparent, as an artist I don’t make a lot on my licensed prints individually—I always prefer to sell original paintings which have their own unique beauty. I offer prints in as many sizes as possible because I do realize that my collectors have different size and presentation needs and these beautiful prints do allow me to continue to get my paintings placed in fine homes all over the world!
