Life in Kauai is finally finished! This one took a while (partly because I only had a few hours this season outside of chandelier orders) but if you want to see how I created this work of art, I have two quick oil painting videos for you to watch. The first video shows the underpainting process which is full of gesture painting and is very expressive. The second video shows how I layered oil paint and built color and texture into the piece.

Here is the video for underpainting, also known as Imprimatura, it’s short and in time lapse:

Here is the video for the second session, which also progresses quickly:

A bit more about Life in Kauai oil painting

The painting size is 12×36 on gallery wrapped canvas. I decided to put this video into fast motion for you to see how it comes together quicker. In reality, my oil paintings take quite a bit of time and my brush strokes are not fast at all.

Life in Kauai has afternoon sunset colors. The skies remind me of the color of the blue skies after a quick rain shower. I kept the colors and brush strokes expressive and fresh. I really wanted the painting to remain modern looking even though the essence of the quintessential plantation cottage is nostalgic.
