The swirl element ties into my swirl and circles theme. It would look lovely on my Vortex piece as well and can also be paired with any of my other painted chandeliers if you want a reverse painted glass chandelier for your room yet need it to be a contemporary lighting fixture. It’s contemporary and clean in design, hangs lovely and gets away from the Tuscan and traditional scrolled iron designs of my other fixtures.

When you are a busy working artist as I am, every new idea can take a while before a design materializes into a piece you can touch. As clean and simple as this design is, I spent the better part of this past half year thinking about it and drawing different options before I was able to make it into the iron fixture you see today. The objective was to design a fixture that would fit my contemporary abstract chandeliers that would have a main element that would tie into the motifs that I like to use in my glass paintings. You will see more of these fixtures accompanying my abstract reverse painted glass chandeliers.

I’m so pleased with how well this chandelier turned out…was going to wait until my delivery drive to show this piece here on my bog but thought, “hey, I can show it now and then”!’ This is a beautiful reflection of California wine country.

The iron fixture for this piece was custom made and hand forged specifically to fit this one glass bowl—and is an example of what I refer to as my ‘ornate style’ iron fixture. Though I love to paint large chandeliers, very few of my pieces each year qualify as large. Most people can handle a large painted chandelier in their space…but they are expensive to create. I only create large chandeliers on commission as people tend to want something specific in a commission…and again, they are quite expensive to make that I wait for those specific pieces.

This hand painted chandelier has grapes of many colors including red, violet, burgundy, green, yellow and blue plus song birds. The client also requested a humming bird or two and I did paint those for her though they are not normally part of my Vineyard Romance Series chandeliers. The large size of this piece allows for the extra grape colors and extra birds and dragonflies (which were painted from pictures from my pond). I wish I had found these photos two months earlier when I was trying to convey to a client, who lives in the Southern part of my state, the difference between a 32″ glass bowl and a 24″ glass bowl—as we were trying to decide on a good size for her reverse painted glass chandelier commission.

The 1st truth is that my 24″ painted chandeliers are perfect for most people and they look beautiful—each glass bowl is hand-crafted and hand painted by me. I’ve installed them into small seaside cottages of 800 sqft and the other extreme—voluminous rooms with 20′ ceilings with both types of clients thinking that the chandelier fit the space beautifully.

The 2nd truth is that most spaces—even small rooms—can handle one of my larger, reverse painted glass chandeliers. The difference between my standard 24″ size and a larger size like a 32″ or a 36″ is a) impact and b) price. You can definitely hang a larger painted chandelier over a dining table in a small room and the results will be very dramatic, guaranteed. The cost for me to produce my painted chandeliers in larger sizes goes up dramatically and the time involved also quadruples. That said, my larger reverse painted glass chandeliers are stunning!!!

These images were of a painted chandelier commission from a couple of years ago. I photographed the glass bowls outside on my hot tub and this client owns one chandelier in a 24″ and one in a 32″ size. This is a complex art form in the sense that colors and design can make one chandelier over another of the same size appear to be larger. This art form has a three-dimensional element. As you walk around one of my reverse painted chandeliers the different flowers and leaves will pop out at you. The larger glass bowls literally have larger planes of dimension. Even though these two bowls look dramatically different in size, when hung the size difference appears to be even greater. The true depth of the glass bowl is deeper in the 32″ and it’s obvious that the painting inside the bowl is more elaborate. In many ways my larger reverse painted glass chandeliers are a totally different animal—there is just so much more surface space in the glass for me to paint—they really are a premium luxury product.

This 32″ bowl will also fit completely over the 24″ bowl with a lot of room to spare. What I don’t think these photos show are the true depth and how these pieces will hang and how stunning they are as paintings…but I think that these photos still can help illustrate a size difference between my standard size and a larger chandelier on a very basic level.

When I’m creating a “new” chandelier concept I allow my creativity to be guided by my instinct for color, space and movement. Usually I will start with a general idea, for example, maybe I already know that I want to paint a macaw or have red ginger flowers or plumerias. Or maybe I start a piece thinking that I want to work within a specific color scheme where I incorporate certain colors but leave others out of the mix.

For a working artist, being inspired is very important and I can honestly say that I’m inspired almost every day to create my reverse painted glass chandeliers or night lights. It’s a true blessing.

In fact, most of the summer season was spent working on commissions. Don’t get me wrong—I love commissions but it’s also very gratifying as an artist to create original works that are ‘new’.

This reverse painted chandelier is inspired by the large 36″ original, Romantic Summer Garden, only it has rose colors throughout and no sky blues. It features roses and peonies flowers. This is a very, very lovely piece in person and I look forward to photographing this work and adding it to my collection on my website.

We took elements from her abstract works to add to this chandelier. I’d like to add that I felt comfortable accepting this commission for a few reasons. One being that my client genuinely likes my style—she just doesn’t have floral influences in her decor. We spoke a lot about how this piece would develop and I had immediate visions of how I could create her chandelier after viewing pictures of her space and existing works of art.

I think it’s important to understand that when you view an artists portfolio—know that is what that artist does well. I turn down commissions every year when people approach me to do something that is very, very different from what exists naturally within my style and interests. You, as an art collector, will have the most success in creating custom commissions if you choose artists based upon the style that you see. That said, I had an immediate feeling on how I could create a piece with abstract elements that would be unique for my client and would also be genuine to my style.

I could say a lot more about this piece. On a very basic level, needless to say it was very interesting to create as a commissioned abstract hand painted chandelier. I am working on a second piece for my collector now. It is nice to be able to share my life’s work with those of you who read my blogs. Life as an artist is a constant journey!

The goal was to create a piece that encompassed my client’s vision of paradise. We also used stargazer lilies and two different types of heliconia flowers. My client’s wife loves hummingbirds so I’ve painted two next to flowers. This piece has a lush dream-like feeling,

Going back to the birds of paradise—I’ve painted them in a very defined fashion. This piece features six birds of paradise in total including a section that is almost like a wreath of birds of paradise.

In many ways it’s hard to truly show how beautiful each one of these reverse painted glass chandeliers are in person. I cannot emphasize enough how beautiful these painted chandeliers are live. I’m very happy with how this piece turned out. This reverse painted glass chandelier has a lot of thought, planning and effort behind it. My hopes for this piece are that it will be enjoyed by my client and his family in their lovely new island home for generations to come. Much Aloha to them!

I love the fact that this chandelier will be installed in their new home in Florida. Our process began with looking at my different painted chandeliers on my website. My collectors are fortunate enough, for once, to be able to visit my studio. We talked about the space that the chandelier was intended for and then came up with a color palate that was based upon the favorite flowers.

This piece has gorgeous blue sky hues and deep sunset colors. Pink is a color theme—I really hadn’t done a primarily ‘pink’ flower piece but fell in love with this one when it was finished. Stay tuned for photos of this hand painted chandelier in it’s new home down the line!

Though nobody alive in my family today directly remembers the attacks on Peal Harbor—our nation’s other significant foreign attack— my family carries this unfortunate event in our history. My grandmother and her family waited two weeks to find out if her older brother was alive—and he was, though he returned a very different person. His ship, the USS West Virginia, sank in the battle and he lost friends in the most horrible of ways. For my great-uncle, from what I understand his life was never easy after that fateful day. I think that the family probably felt extreme relief to find him alive. I’m sure that helped make our memory of Pearl Harbor a bit better, considering the circumstances.

Painting is my greatest gift and what I feel is my purpose in this life. It’s my contribution to society—however small—and it’s important to me to continue to use my talent to produce beauty. When I was painting this reverse painted table lamp I thought of all of the highly productive people who’s lives were cut short—some in an instant and some in what must have been an agonizingly long time—and all of the people who grieved hardest from their loss. Life is what it is…the good and the bad. I worked today in honor and contemplation of those who would not have the choice…ten years later.

The chandelier bowl in the foreground is my newest piece and it’s inspired by the desert. In a way, this one shot summarizes a lot of what I hold dear: my paintings, my painted chandeliers, music and my love for tropical flowers and jungle foliage. The banana is artificial but we do have several live bananas surrounding the property!
